Rafflesia Arnoldii is the largest INDIVIDUAL flower producing genus on Earth.
There are also other larger flower producers like the Titan Arum and Talipot palm, but these produce a CLUSTER of flowers.

Title of the biggest flower of the world goes to “Rafflesia Arnoldii”. This huge flower blooms on a plant which is typically a mottled orange brown and white parasitic plant. When in full bloom this flower could be 35.8 inches in its width. Average weight of the “Rafflesia Arnoldii” flower could generally be up to 24.3 lbs. Why do we say "oops a daisy" and not the name of any other flower?
Actually this phrase has been greatly corrupted over the years. The original phrase came from the early 1700s as "up a day". It was then, as it is today, a nonsensical expression of the same meaning.
By the mid 1800s the day part was pretty much changed to daisy as the expression "up a daisy" and then to its various versions today "oops a daisy" "upsa-daisy" "upsy-daisy".....
Why do we say "oops a daisy" and not the name of any other flower?
Because if you are doing landscaping and you are pulling out dandilions you may pull out a daisy. So you say oops a daisy. If you believe that...you are stupid.
Reply:Because oops a chrysanthemum doesn't have the same ring to it.
Reply:Well oops a rose sounds stupid.lol
Reply:there`s a song that goes `pick me up buttercup`.
are the sayings related .lol
Reply:Maybe it was an old saying that started in the olden days when people would walk through a field and try not to step on the daisies....and if they did they would say, "oops a daisy!"....because daisies were everywhere and they didn't know the names of the other flowers...daisy was like a generic name for "flower"...and daisies grow out in the open where they might get stepped on...that is the reason why people say "oops a daisy!"
Reply:it just sounds right
Reply:its a bit of a play on words instead of saying ''oops a day'' people say oops a daisy, daisy is the closest to day.
Reply:"Ooops a Geranium

Name this flower for 10?
I took a photograph of this beautiful flower in Benidorm yesterday, it's such a wonderful colour, but what is it? The head of the flower is about 1.5 inches in diameter.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2399/2457...
Name this flower for 10?
It is the Lantan species. Lantana camera. Grows wild and also used as hedge plant in gardens.
The flower is a whole group of flowers arranged on the disc and the flowes start opening from the periphery and move towards the centre.
The flower on day it opens is yellow in colour and the colour changes to pink or red on day 2.
It remains on the flower head for 4-8 days and hence you will see pink and yellow flowers in the flowerdisc.
It is also available in single colours like white, yellow only. yellowish white, purple. red only and saffron color.
The plant has a strong aromatic odour.
Reply:Lantana, easily available in the house plant section of any good garden centre. It will not survive outdoors during the UK winter. I have had one which is happy in a frost free greenhouse during the winter.
Reply:It's called a lantana...Google images and you'll see =)
Beautiful pic, by the way!
Reply:It is called a Lantana, it is classed as a weed in S-Africa and people were asked to remove them from their gardens etc. It is an invader plant.
Reply:What a nice closeup. I'll go along with lantana.
Reply:Lantana camara - Yellow Sage Verbenaceae
Reply:I didnt have a clue but its a beautiful picture

Reply:i knew i wouldn't know the answer just wanted to admire it. It's very pretty.

Poll......If I were to name a flower Rose P.鈾?could I get a patent on the name?
Or would I need to fly to England for written permission?
Poll......If I were to name a flower Rose P.鈾?could I get a patent on the name?
I don't think you get patents on names. I think they are just registered with some kind of botanical society.
And I'm pretty sure that if you develop the variety you can name it whatever you want.
Reply:you cant because is a composition of a standard name.. its like patent "Coca-Cola blue".. see?
Unless is a product created by you.. i mean a "plastic flower" and you name it Rose P.鈾? then you can get a patent for the plastic flower NAME, not the name or flower per se
I hope i made myself clear
Reply:Dont you patent an actual invention? You could Trade Mark it?
Whats so special about this flower, is it genetically modified?
Reply:If it's a rose, contact the American Rose Society in Shreveport, Louisana and they can tell you how to go about it.
Reply:by any other name, it's smell is sweet !

Hmmmm...hard to tell as they Echinacea and Rudbeckia can look similar.
If you can go up to the flower, feel the center. If it feels sharp like a "cone" then it's probably a coneflower (Echinacea). Here is a great link that shows the stems, flower and foliage up close of each. Take a look and perhaps you can compare with the original plant.
Rudbeckia (a few different ones)

Echinacea paradoxa

Once you think you have it narrowed down, you can also search the web for better pictures. Good luck! :)

I want to know what flower the skunk's girlfriend's name is in the Bambi's movie? or doe's she have a name at all?
What is flower the skunks girlfriends name in bambi?
Maybe you're thinking of "Petunia", the skunk in Happy Tree Friends (a Flash cartoon). It was also a song that I sang in grade school. Petunia, the skunk who nobody loves...and nobody wants around... Wow! That brings back memories.
"Flower", the skunk, is one of the main characters in Bambi (the film, not the book) but Flower's mate has no known first name.

How can i print a name on a flower petal?
if you print from the computer, you could tape the petal on the sheet of paper, put in the printer and make sure whatever your writing is in the same place as the petal so that its gonna print out on it.
you could also "stamp" it on there. all you need to do is write the name on a piece of pater, then turn it over and put where it says the name on the petal, put a light sheet over it and iron it. The heat will move the ink from the paper to the petal.
hope this helped, good luck

Reply:The most beautiful and fragrant flower that I have ever been privileged to experience. It is a beautiful orchid-like white flower with feathery insides and a star-shaped stamen. It blooms only at night, for a single night, and the redolence of its fragrance is so powerful that it permeates the air at a great distance from its source. The plant's technical name is 'Epiphyllum Oxypetallum' and it is also sometimes called Night Cereus or "Queen of the Night".
Reply:Cestrum nocturnum - ( Night Blooming Jasmine )
C. nocturnum is an evergreen shrub with night-blooming white flower clusters. As the flowers open in the evening, a lovely, bold fragrance is emitted. Likes constantly moist soil and full sun. Can tolerate some shade. Spring fertilization is recommended, as well as monthly feeds during the growing season. To maintain it's compact growth, pinch foliage and cut back hard after flowering.
Reply:Try the Casablanca Lillies...they are very fragrant esp in the evening and bloom when the sun goes down and or at night depending on the climate.

What is the name of this flower? and is this a good picture?
Black eyed Susan
I like the picture.
Reply:i'm really not sure, it looks like a wild daisy to me, it doesn't seem like something you buy at the nursery, or something you have to plant from seed, it looks on the wild side to me.
but, i couldn't really be sure. you also ask if this is a nice picture, i think it is, i like the exposure, the only thing i would have changed was the focus, i would have tried to get it all in focus, or the front part of the plant, which stand out in the picture.
put other than where you chose to focus, i think it's a really nice picture, but next time just wait for the sun to come out a little more, so you get nice colors in the foreground and in the background, overall, i'd give it a 8/10, nice picture.
can really see potential.
Reply:Thats a Black eyed Susan. And yes a amazing pic!!!!!! *Thumbs Up*

This flower's name is from the Greek word for star?
Aster
Reply:aster
Reply:Aster (syn. Diplopappus Cass.) is a genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae. The genus once contained nearly 600 species in Eurasia and North America, but after morphologic and molecular research on the genus during the 1990's, it was decided that the North American species are better treated in a series of other genera. After this split there are roughly 180 species within the genus, all but one being confined to Eurasia. The name Aster comes from the Ancient Greek word astron, meaning "star", arriving through the Latin word astrum with the same meaning, referring to the shape of the flower head. Many species and a variety of hybrids and varieties are popular as garden plants because of their attractive and colourful flowers. Aster species are used as food plants by the larvae of a number of Lepidoptera species - see list of Lepidoptera which feed on Aster. Asters can grow in all hardiness zones.

Looking for a name of this flower.?
I saw this flower recently and no one knows the name of it. So I thought I would ask here. But regretfully, I don't have a picture of it. Sorry.
Let's see - here is the description.
It grew on really big bush, so it's not a flower from a tree.
The one I saw had dark red petals.
The petals close when the sun sets and opens when the sun raises.
Any luck? O_o
Looking for a name of this flower.?
Passiflora rubens.
Reply:If the bush is climbing and clinging to surrounding tree or fence, it could be a Morning Glory. Those flowers open at dawn and close in the afternoon.

Reply:im pretty sure your descrtibing a rose...or a hibiscus or even a Phoeny all of those can be grown in a bush and can be dark red

it was the germanium a woman named Rev grew them and she taught him his philosophy. (and gave him his haircut) Red was her favorite color. she protected Vash and when she dies he wears red to remember her.
Reply:i think it was the Geranium which is symbolic that's why Vash wore red

I was told the name "yesenia" means flower in arabic, is this true?
it was from a spanish soap opera where the character was a gypsy.
I was told the name "yesenia" means flower in arabic, is this true?
no "yesenia" does not mean flower in arabic.
"Zahra"is Arabic for flower and "Yasmeena" is a type of flower in arabic.
Reply:Meaning unknown. Possibly from the name of the species of palm tree; possibly means "flower" in Arabic.

What is the scientific name for edible flower?
edible flower.
There are many edible flowers -- common daylily as a "for instance" -- but the plant has a scientific name (in this case Hemerocallis fulva) -- the flower does not.
What is the scientific name for edible flower?
Herbis Delectus???

Can you name an imperfect, complete flower?
Common name for the flower please.
Can you name an imperfect, complete flower?
By definition there can't be an imperfect, complete flower. A complete flower has all parts--petals, sepals, pistils, stamens, but imperfect flowers lack either pistils or stamens (and are therefore incomplete).

Looking for the name of a flower...?
When I was little, we used to pick these flowers, that were kind of funnel shaped, just the flower part, no stem. Then we would suck on the end and a little bit of sweet nectar would come out. Has anybody here done this? Do you know what the flower is?
Looking for the name of a flower...?
It sounds like honeysuckle. We used to do that when i was a kid, too.
Reply:I remember doing that. It seems like it was a columbine.
Reply:yeah. sounds like honeysuckle. what color is this flower you're referring to?
Reply:Yes, I remember doing this as a kid my parents had a busch in their yard and my sister and I would always suck the nectar out of them. I can't remember what it was called though.
Reply:Honeysuckle in both white and yellow. The vines are a bear to get rid of when it is time to clean the fence though.
Reply:definatly huney suckle because thats really the only flower i know of that is a bit funnel shaped. you could try typing it in on google and see what comes up...if not try typing honeysuckle and click on images and see if it is that flower your are looking for.
hope this helps

Name the largest flower ever found and it's one main negative feature?
Isn't that the Rafflesia? And it smells like rotting meat?
Name the largest flower ever found and it's one main negative feature?
The world's largest flower, called Rafflesia, can have a diameter up to one meter and can weigh up to 10 kilograms. It also smells like rotting flesh.Rafflesia arnoldii is a member of the genus Rafflesia. It is noted for producing the largest individual flower on earth. There are some plants with larger flowering organs, the Titan Arum and Talipot palm, but these are technically clusters of many flowers. It occurs only in the rainforests of Sumatra and Borneo in the Indonesia Archipelago.
Reply:I can't remember the name of it, but if I remember correctly it is supposed to emit an extremely foul odor.
Reply:Rafflesia arnoldii is the largest flower, technically.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rafflesia_a...
Some people would say that the titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum) is larger but scientifically, it is a compound flower, made up of many smaller flowers.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titan_arum
Both smell really bad. They smell like rotting meat to attract bugs over huge distances.
Reply:The largest flower ever reported is Rafflesia found mainly in Indonesian rain forest. It is a genus of parasitic flowering plants.
Flowers of some of its species may be over 100 cm in diameter, and weigh up to 10 kg. Even the smallest species, R. manillana, has 20 cm diameter flowers.
Negative: The flower looks and smells like rotten meat.

What is the name of largest flower in the world?
The Rafflesia arnoldii, the flower with the world's largest bloom This rare flower is found in the rainforests of Indonesia. It can grow to be 3 feet across and weigh up to 15 pounds! It is a parasitic plant, with no visible leaves, roots, or stem. It attaches itself to a host plant to obtain water and nutrients. When in bloom, the Rafflesia emits a repulsive odor, similar to that of rotting meat. This odor attracts insects that pollinate the plant.
What is the name of largest flower in the world?
rafflesia....In some species, such as Rafflesia arnoldii, the flower may be over 100 centimetres (39 in) in diameter, and weigh up to 10 kilograms (22 lb). Even the smallest species, R. manillana, has 20 cm diameter flowers
The name "corpse flower" applied to Rafflesia is confusing because this common name also refers to the Titan Arum (Amorphophallus titanum) of the family Araceae. Moreover, because Amorphophallus has the world's largest unbranched inflorescence, it is sometimes mistakenly credited as having the world's largest flower.
Reply:Amorphophallus Titanum or Titan Arum. In Indonesia it is called Bunga Bangkai (Corpse Flower) because it smells like a corpse
. It can reach to 1 m wide and the height of more than 2 m. There are 170 species of them. This one is bigger than Rafflesia. Rafflesia stays on the ground.
Reply:As other contributors have said, Rafflesia has a huge flower. It is the colour of flesh - a mottled brown-pink and smells of rotting meat. This attracts flies for pollination. It is a complete parasite so all the food required for its huge flower is taken from its 'host' plant.

Ixia looks like a small gaily-painted spiky-petalled gladiolus.
Iceland poppy looks like pastel shallow crinkled glass salad bowls raised on high fuzzy stems above a snot-green whorl of notched leaves.
Ipomoea is the genus that includes all the convolvulus and morning glories, so other than vining and trumpet shaped flowers that have specific opening times, you can imagine them looking like anything.

Anyone know of flower w/ the name Lucas in it? Son wondering why his sis Lily has a flower and he doesn't.ty
If the bulb of the non-flowering lily was undersized for that particular species, it may not flower this year.
Another cause for non-flowering is bulb damage. The lily beetle larvae may damage bulbs and cause non-flowering.
I am not aware of any flower with the name Lucas in it.

Can anyone tell me where the purple flower called "pattisons curse" or Salvation jane got its name from. thanx
In western australia it is considered a weed and called "pattersons curse" but in other states of australia its know as salvation jane because live stock can eat it although im told it provides very little nutrients
im curious to see if anyone knows the origins of the names
Can anyone tell me where the purple flower called "pattisons curse" or Salvation jane got its name from. thanx
Patterson's Curse or Paterson's Curse (Echium plantagineum) is an invasive annual plant native to the area surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, but best known in Australia, where it is also known as Salvation Jane (particularly in South Australia). Other names are Blueweed, Lady Campbell Weed or Riverina Bluebell.
In the 1880s it was introduced to Australia, probably both as an accidental contaminate of pasture seed and as an ornamental plant. It is said that the name derives from the bitter experience of the Paterson or Patterson family, early settlers of the country near Albury. They had the first seeds brought from Europe to beautify their garden, and then could only watch helplessly as the weed infested previously productive pastures for many miles around. more at link below.

Carli Gazoorian - Where does maiden pink flower get it's name?
Maiden Pink
Dianthus deltoides
The colour pink may be named after the flower. The origin of the flower name 'pink' is unknown; it has been suggested that it comes from the frilled edge of the flowers, which look as though they were cut with pinking shears, but actually, the shears were patented in 1893 and got their name from the flower.
Alternate theory:
A name given to several plants of the caryophyllaceous genus Dianthus, and to their flowers, which are sometimes very fragrant and often double incultivated varieties. The species are mostly perennial herbs, with opposite linear leaves, and handsome five-petaled flowers with a tubular calyx (similar to a maiden's....). Thus the name.

Is there a flower named may?
The Hawthorne bush is also called May. Mainly because it flowers in the month of May. An old English saying is "Never cast a clout til May is out". Which means not to move into summer clothes until May is over. Either the flower, or the month, there is some dispute on that one. I hope this helps.

What is the name of the largest flower in the world?
Q: What is the largest flower in the world?
A: The Rafflesia arnoldii.
The flower with the world's largest bloom is the Rafflesia arnoldii. This rare flower is found in the rainforests of Indonesia.
Another enormous flower found in Indonesia is the Amorphophallus titanum, or Titan arum. It is also known as the "corpse flower" for its unpleasant odor. Like the Rafflesia, the Titan emits the smell of rotting flesh to attract pollinators. Technically, the Titan arum is not a single flower. It is a cluster of many tiny flowers, called an inflorescence. The Titan arum has the largest unbranched inflorescence of all flowering plants. The plant can reach heights of 7 to 12 feet and weigh as much as 170 pounds!
That last fact is fascinating! :)
EDIT:
Rafflesia arnoldii is a member of the genus Rafflesia. It is noted for producing the largest individual flower on earth. There are some plants with larger flowering organs, the Titan Arum and Talipot palm, but these are technically clusters of many flowers. It occurs only in the rainforests of Sumatra and Borneo in the Indonesia Archipelago.
Several species of Rafflesia grow in the jungles of southeast Asia, many of them threatened or endangered. Rafflesia arnoldii is the largest; its flower attains a diameter of nearly a meter and can weigh up to 11 kilograms. Not only is it the world's largest flower, but it is also one of the most bizarre and improbable organisms on the planet.
There's pictures in both of the sources :)

Rafflesia arnoldii is the largest; its flower attains a diameter of nearly a meter and can weigh up to 11 kilograms. Not only is it the world's largest flower, but it is also one of the most bizarre and improbable organisms on the planet.
It lives as a parasite on the Tetrastigma vine, as its host, which grows only in primary (undisturbed) rainforests. While many parasites appear like normal plants, Rafflesia lacks any observable leaves, roots, or even stems. Likened to fungi, Rafflesia individuals grow as thread-like strands of tissue completely embedded within and in intimate contact with surrounding host cells from which nutrients and water are obtained. Perhaps the only part of Rafflesia that is identifiable as distinctly plant-like are the flowers; although, even these are bizarre because they attain massive proportions and are usually reddish-brown and stink of rotting flesh. The flower is pollinated by flies attracted by its scent.
Rafflesia arnoldii growing near Mount Kinabalu, Borneo.Rafflesia arnoldii is rare and fairly hard to locate. It is especially difficult to see in flower; the buds take many months to develop and the flower lasts for just a few days. How many of these strange plants still survive is unknown, but as the remaining primary forests of Borneo and Sumatra disappear, it can only be assumed that their numbers are dwindling. Many are known to be nearing extinction. Some environmentalists are thinking of a way to recreate the species' environment, in an effort to stimulate a recovery in the population of this endangered species. This has proved unsuccessful so far, but the efforts have continued. However, steps are being taken to conserve the forests of Sumatra and Borneo.
Pollination is a rare event due to several factors. The flowers are unisexual and single sites usually produce either male or female flowers. Therefore, in order to have effective pollination, male flowers must be near to, and open at the same time as, the female flowers so that flies can transfer the pollen.
Specimen of Rafflesia arnoldii at the Kyoto Botanical Garden. While male and female individuals could be closely spaced, flower bud mortality is 80-90% per site thereby reducing the chance of co-flowering two individuals. Furthermore, the flower lifespan is only 5-7 days. Also, the current population distributions are fragmented due to habitat destruction. So, successful reproduction relies on the unlikely event that a male and female would bloom during the same 5-7 days and that a fly could carry pollen between the often widely separated populations.
[edit] Trivia
Rafflesia arnoldii is seen to be the inspiration for the Pokemon Vileplume (Japanese name Rafflesia) for the large flower on its head which bears a resemblance to Rafflesia. It is said to have also inspired the Pokemon Gloom (pre-evolution of Vileplume) for its foul smelling odour and bud also resembling an un-bloomed Rafflesia flower
"Rafflesia" is also the name given to a major enemy in the Feywood stage of Final Fantasy XII, whose appearance and abilities appear inspired by the giant bloom.

When in bloom, the Rafflesia emits a repulsive odor, similar to that of rotting meat. This odor attracts insects that pollinate the plant.
"Ayana" is an African name meaning "beautiful flower". But do you know in what African language?
I know it is an African name but in what African language. (The actual language not the country!) Please give links to the websites with your answer. Thanks!
"Ayana" is an African name meaning "beautiful flower". But do you know in what African language?
There's Ayana, which is Amharic.(ethiopian) It means flower or blossom.
There's also a Hindi name Ayana, that also means beautiful, and a cherokee indian (U.S) name Ayana that means eternal blossom.
Reply:hey! :D my name is ayana!:D and my mom told me that 'yana' meant a 'beautiful flower'. Then she added the 'a' as the initial. 'A' is the 1st letter in the alphabet; that is why for her, adding an 'a' would mean that I am the 1st in her heart :D im so happy bout this topic:D Report Abuse
Reply:The African Language is Somali. Its my baby girls name. and before I known what it meant. i actually nicknamed her Beautiful. Vain, yes, very LOL
Reply:I'm not exactly sure about what country Ayana is from but I know Ayan is somalian/Djiboutian name my boyfriend is and its very common on the east coast of africa, go to google and type in african baby names ayana and it should pull up stuff, good luck
Reply:I have no idea, but I had to comment on the name. I love it, I wanted to name my daughter that, it was one of my first choices, but it didn't go very well with our last name, so I had to set it aside. But I always loved it, it's beautiful. Hope you find what you are looking for.

What is the name of this flower/plant? (Picture Included)?
It has little yellow petals and is on a brown branch rather than a green stem. Thanks so much.

What is the name of this flower/plant? (Picture Included)?
I'm pretty sure it winter jasmine or Latin: Jasminum nudiflorum It鈥檚 the earliest shrub to bloom in the garden in our climate. Blossoms are scattered from January 鈥榯il March with peak bloom in February. The Chinese name is "Yingchunhua," or the Welcoming Spring Flower, an apt name for this early bloomer.
Winter jasmine is a little mounded plant that grows a couple feet tall with green, arching stems that cascade over walls and embankments, creating a mounded, sprawling form when allowed to grow unimpeded. It has small, lustrous, trifoliate leaves that fall with the first frost. Though deciduous, the green stems give it an evergreen appearance.

I don't believe it's forsythia because that plant only has four petals and yours has six

Reply:Yes I believe it is a Forsythia. Never prune it in the winter or before it flowers because you wont get any flowers that year. Always prune flowering shrubs between 1-3 weeks after flowering. ^^
Reply:Pappus of ray flowers i searched flowers image on google that came up and it showed thishttp://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=h...

Reply:That is forsythia.
Bloom comes first - then leaves.
Prune after blooming.
Reply:Winter Jasmine for sure. No doubt :)
Reply:That looks like the forsythia bush. They bloom in the spring! Easy to grow but need to be pruned right after blooming as they can get "leggy." They don't have much of a fragrance but are showy. :)
